Sotol or Tequila?

Mexico is a generous land. A land rich of traditions and culture. While Tequila is known worldwide, Connoisseurs are in heaven with Sotol, Mexico’s best kept secret.

Is Sotol just a supreme Tequila?

The short answer is No.

Tequila is a distilled spirit primarily found in the outskirts of Tequila, Mexico and in the central Mexican state of Jalisco. It was first produced in the 16th Century and has an average alcohol by volume (ABV) of 38%.

Both spirit’s are made from wild agave plants in Mexico. However the agave plant used to make Tequila is cultivated, meaning that the agave plant is grown and raised within the lands of each distillery. Each agave plant can make up to 6 bottles of Tequila on average and has an 8 year cycle before the plant can be harvested. This is due to the sugar content required in each agave, the more mature the plant, the better it’s natural sugars which in turn produces a higher quality tequila.

Sotol is a little different. The agave plant used to make it is 100% wild, harvested from Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert.  During it’s production, unlike Tequila, only a single bottle of Sotol is made from one wild agave plant. This increases it’s purity as there is no added ingredients and no additives or herbicides. However it also increases the cost, due to it’s purity Sotol is on average 30% more than Tequila.

Historically whilst Tequila was consumed by the majority, Sotol was reserved for the Haciendados and only very distinguished guests.

What is Reposado?

Reposado is present in both spirits and simply means that the spirit’s have been rested in oak for a length of time. In Tequila the duration is between 2 months and 1 year, in Sotol it is between several months and a year. The oak ageing tends to leave a lingering spice and a creamier finish on the palate of both spirits.

Mexican Laws

Similar to the French appellation laws of Champagne, Tequila can only be produced in Mexico.

So if you’re looking for a high quality Tequila that won’t leave you with hangover, always look for 100% agave when reading the label. You’re best choice however is to choose an organic Sotol as you can be sure that there are no added sugars or additives, just pure and natural ingredients.
