Chardonnay is our grape for Day 3. Contrary to what many people might think Chardonnay can have a wide range of flavours and doesn’t have to be oaked. The varietal is believed to have originated from Lebanon but perhaps one of the most famous regions for Chardonnay is Chablis, Burgundy.
Did you also know that Chardonnay is used in Champagne? Although it is typically blended with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay is the primary grape used in Champagne.
As well as famous Old World regions, Chardonnay is also grown in the New World. It’s versatility, easy to grow vines and high yield make it a hit with wine makers all over the globe.
Most Chardonnays are dry and have a beautifully crisp acidity! Many people dislike Chardonnay because they think all Chardonnays are oaked! Good news, they’re not! Typical flavours include apple, tangerine, lemon, lime and melon. Foods which go fantastically with Chardonnay are white fish, fresh salads and hard alpine cheeses. Try grilled Dover sole or pan-fried scallops.
