Thirty grapes in thirty days: Cabernet Franc

California Cabaret Frank No2 'The Aviary'

We welcome the father of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc! Thought to have originated from Basque, France, Cabernet Franc is a medium-bodied red wine that is one a famous varietal used in a Bordeaux red wine. Although created in France, the grape is grown across the globe in countries such Argentina, Chile and America. California’s warm climate is fantastic for Cabernet Franc and produces a bold and opulent fruity red wine.

Cabaret Franc is a marvellous gem created in California, USA. This is a seriously good wine with a seriously great price-tag of just £8.00 inc VAT! A must try wine with elegance, finesse and a great label. Perfect for dinner parties with friends.

Something maybe you didn’t know is that Cabernet Sauvignon is a crossing of Cabernet Franc and white grape Sauvignon Blanc. It is commonly blended with grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot which are also varietals used to make the much-loved Bordeaux blend.

Cabernet Franc is known for its spiciness and high acidity. For that reason we would recommend you go choose a blend rather than a straight Cabernet Franc. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon tones down the spiciness to avoid overpowering the palate. We think the best way to enjoy Cabernet Franc is with great food! A leg of lamb with thyme compliments the spice well. Strong cheeses such a goats cheese and Camembert studded with garlic are great alternatives along with a mushroom ravioli.
